SHARING my passion for bread baking, and sourdough in particular, has been part of most of my adult life. Born and raised in Germany, bread is part of my cultural heritage and upon coming to the States good bread was something I greatly missed.

REALIZING that I can make a difference and help change the world by spreading kindness through bread and becoming a "community bread activist" did not happen until many years later (2017) when I listened to a TEDTalk by Dr. Nadezhda Savova-Grigova, an anthropologist and founder of BREAD Houses Network in Sofia, Bulgaria. Her talk reflected everything I felt about the power of bread to connect people and make a positive impact in a world that needs more kindness. I was able to connect with Nadezhda and we have been corresponding of the past few years. In 2024 we had the opportunity to travel to Sofia, Bulgaria and finally meet her and her family and participate in a most uplifting bread therapy workshop with disabled adults at a local a day care facility for adults.

STARTING a non-profit to spread kindness and connect people through bread was the next logical next step, but it still took a few years and a leap of faith. I am thrilled I followed my passion and will be able to share my love for bread with people from ALL walks of life while at the same time helping people create meaningful connections. How blessed I am to be able to work with a team who shares my passion for spreading benignity (kindness) through bread!

It was my dream for a long time to have a dedicated facility, a bread house, for our community activities and in 2025 this dream finally became reality with our opening the BreadHaus in Kettle Fall, WA.

I am Katrina but my friends call me Kat. I am super excited to be a part of the Bread Encounters team at the BreadHaus.
My passion for bread started a few years ago when my son received a scholarship from Bread Encounters to attend a Sourdough 101 workshop through his youth group, the 1804 Club. I was invited to join him and was really excited to finally get to the bottom of sourdough baking. I had over-complicated it for so many years.

Once I attended the class, so many lightbulbs went off in my head and my baking journey began! It was also real special to learn alongside my son, who also enjoys cooking and baking and it's something that I will cherish forever.

I began baking sourdough breads for my family, neighbors, friends and even passing along my knowledge to others of how simple sourdough can be. One thing I noticed along the way, is that bread really does bring people together! There is a kindness that comes with sharing bread. I really believe in what Bread Encounters is doing and I feel that we are giving something truly special back to the community. I am grateful to be apart of this journey of sharing the loaf!
